Germany has one of the strongest biomedical research sectors in Europe, with deep expertise in cell biology, immunology, and clinical trials. For patients, however, access to advanced mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) and exosome therapies is limited and tightly regulated. Most advanced cell therapies are classified as Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) and are largely confined to approved clinical trials or specialist academic centres, overseen under the framework of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
A number of private clinics in Germany advertise "stem cell" offerings, but the availability of authorised advanced cellular therapy remains narrow. Many of the specific regenerative and immunotherapy protocols patients are looking for are simply not offered to them domestically outside of a trial setting.
For German patients who want access to advanced regenerative medicine now, there is a clear pathway: travelling to Vilnius, where these treatments are administered under EU and Lithuanian medical regulation at Innovita Clinic, in some cases for over 20 years. Patients who travel to Lithuania for treatment do so under EU and Lithuanian medical regulation. Advanced cell therapies across the European Union sit within the same overarching ATMP framework coordinated by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), so Germany and Lithuania operate under a shared set of EU-level standards for advanced therapies.
National authorisation, however, differs between the two countries. In Germany, advanced therapies are overseen by the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI), while treatment at Innovita Clinic is authorised and supervised by the relevant Lithuanian authorities. This is a different national regulatory pathway, with its own evidence, manufacturing, and authorisation standards. We don't represent that any treatment available in Vilnius is PEI-approved or available in Germany.
Because Germany and Lithuania are both members of the European Union and the Schengen Area, German patients travel freely, with no visa required. What this means in practice for German patients:
The travel is short. Germany has direct flights to Vilnius International Airport (VNO), so most German patients reach the clinic without any connection. Common direct and near-direct routes include:
Budget carriers such as Wizz Air and Ryanair also serve the route, which keeps flights affordable and frequent. Germany and Lithuania are close neighbours within the EU, so travel time is measured in hours rather than a long-haul day.
For most German patients, treatment is combined with a trip of 5-10 days total, depending on protocol.
