In the UK, most mesenchymal stem cell therapies and exosome therapies are not routinely available through the NHS or standard private clinics. Access to advanced regenerative and cellular therapies remains limited, and many of the treatments patients read about are simply not offered domestically outside of a research setting.
Regenerative medicine in the UK is regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), with advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) also falling under the oversight of the Health Research Authority and the Human Tissue Authority. Under that framework, most advanced cell therapies remain confined to clinical trials or a small number of specialist centres, rather than being widely accessible.
For UK patients who want access to advanced regenerative medicine now, there is a clear pathway: travelling to Vilnius, where these treatments are administered under EU and Lithuanian regulation at Innovita Clinic, in some cases for over 20 years. For many patients we work with, that is the practical route to care that is not yet routinely available at home.
Patients who travel to Lithuania for treatment do so under EU and Lithuanian medical regulation, not under UK MHRA authorisation. This is a different regulatory framework, with different evidence, manufacturing, and authorisation standards. We don't represent that any treatment available in Vilnius is MHRA-approved or available through the NHS.
Since Brexit, this arrangement is unchanged for the purposes of medical travel. UK citizens continue to travel to Lithuania visa-free for short stays, and treatment abroad remains a personal decision made between the patient and the treating clinic.
What this means in practice for UK patients:
Unlike patients travelling from North America, UK patients have direct flights to Vilnius International Airport (VNO). Ryanair and Wizz Air fly direct from London to Vilnius in about two and a half hours, which makes the trip considerably simpler than a connection through a European hub.
